How to prepare for the IELTS exam
Do you want to go to university in Amsterdam? Do you need the IELTS exam for university entrance? Then read the tips below to get you started on the right track.
Read widely
One of the best ways to prepare for IELTS is to read as many different genres as possible. This means you will broaden your vocabulary and be prepared for any type of text you might have to read in the exam. So if you currently only read non-fiction, try some fiction; or if your reading is limited to the newspaper and short articles, try reading longer articles.
It also helps to read about as many different topics as possible and to read different styles such as analytical texts or descriptive writing.
Listen carefully
Training your listening skills is a great way to get ready for IELTS. You can do this by listening to as many different accents as possible (YouTube is a great resource for this) and to a mix of monologues, dialogues and discussions.
For example you can practise your English listening skills by listening to a TED talk and noting the main points of the talk. Or by listening to a dialogue and noting what the relationship between the speakers is.
Speak and write often
While getting a varied input of English is important in preparing for the IELTS test, it is also important to practise your output.
This means writing lots of essays and descriptions of graphs/charts/diagrams. The more you repeat this, the better you will remember the important structural phrases you will need.
This also means practising giving short talks. Again, the more you practise this the easier it will be to remember the phrases that will support you in the speaking test. Recording yourself and listening back will help you to notice where you need to improve/focus.
