From Nervous to Natural: Building English Confidence in Amsterdam
22 September 2025
Many expats arrive in Amsterdam with enough English to get by, only to freeze the first time they have to speak in a meeting, on a date or at the doctor. Knowing English and speaking English are two different skills — and confidence is built through practice with feedback, not by memorising more grammar rules.
That is exactly the philosophy behind our English courses at MixTree Languages. In a recent feature on IamExpat, we explained how our small, friendly classes are designed to take learners from hesitation to fluency — through role-play of real Amsterdam situations (negotiating rent, joining an international team meeting, ordering at a busy café), targeted feedback on pronunciation and word choice, and a strong focus on speaking from the very first lesson.
The article also covers:
- Why in-person learning still matters in 2025 — turn-taking, intonation and instant correction that apps can’t replicate.
- Our community events (the Tuesday Language Meetup and Wednesday Conversation Cafe) where students practise English socially.
- Our CEFR-aligned course range from A1 Beginner to C1 Advanced, taught with the Oxford English File series.
- The flexibility of our online evening courses for learners who can’t always attend in person.
- Why CELTA / TESOL-qualified teachers with 5+ years of classroom experience make such a difference.
