Best English food in Amsterdam
Don’t want to see another pancake? Already tried all the different kinds of stamppot? Longing for a large plate of Bangers & Mash or Fish & Chips? You don’t have to search very hard to find English food in Amsterdam. There are plenty of pubs and English restaurants in Amsterdam. We have selected the best English food in Amsterdam. Check out our tips here!
1. The Old Bell
The Old Bell is located at Rembrandtplein – the famous centre of Amsterdam nightlife. It is a traditional English pub that has a large selection of both local and imported beers, and delicious English food on the menu. Go for the seasonal sausage or one of the traditional English pies and drink a Newcastle Brown Ale with it. You will forget all about Amsterdam and feel like you’re being transported to a local pub in Birmingham.
2. Pier-62 Fish & Chips
Pier-62 Fish & Chips is exactly what it sounds like: the place to find good Fish &Chips in Amsterdam. Is there any food more English than good old Fish &Chips? Pier-62 is very authentic and traditional: they stick to the Fish & Chips recipe that was brought to England by the Spanish in the 17th century. Coated in flour and dipped in a beer batter, special spices and flour, this Fish & Chips is one of the best English foods you’ll find in Amsterdam!
3. Greenwoods
Feeling hungover after exploring Amsterdam’s nightlife? There is no better remedy than a full English breakfast. Luckily, Greenwoods serves several variations of the traditional English breakfast all day long. They even have a vegetarian and a vegan version! You can also find various egg dishes, from Eggs Benedict to Eggs Florentine, and a pancake stack here. Greenwoods is your Amsterdam go-to place for all kinds of English foods. They even have a lovely high tea (Those scones! Those cakes!). There are two locations in the city centre: one on Keizersgracht and one on Singel. Enjoy!
4. Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub
Okay, okay, we know that Ireland and England are not the same. But we just had to include this classic and famous Irish pub on our list. Located in the middle of the red-light district, Durty Nelly’s is in the heart of Amsterdam’s nightlife area. The pub, which is also very popular with Amsterdam’s Irish population, serves a full Irish breakfast, Fish & Chips and a traditional Irish stew. Who wouldn’t want to eat that, with a pint of Guinness to wash it down?
5. The Black Dog
Founded by a mix of Amsterdammers and expats, The Black Dog is not your typical English restaurant. They serve dishes from all over the world in a modern but still traditional pub setting. Why would we include it on a list of the best English foods in Amsterdam? Because they serve a delicious Beef & Ale pie and a Traditional Proper Sunday Roast (on Sundays, obviously). Plus, they have a recommended beer for each dish! That’s just how we like it.
